Disturbia By The Glades

Church By The Glades proves church CAN be relevant and cool. Just to support that claim, they have remade many of the “cool” contemporary songs of our day. Here is an example of one – Disturbia.

This is the same church that has promoted itself as “The World’s Largest Strip Club” [in that its members come clean before God], have given away a Nintendo Wii for Christmas to increase numbers, and have even offered Miley Cyrus tickets.

Many people would say that criticizing such a thing would be unloving and harsh. I don’t think that we need to resort to grasping everything the world has and making it Christian. We don’t need such things to bring people through the front doors. The church grew just fine throughout the book of Acts, and through the centuries without the desperation of trying to look cool.

  1. Wow… that is one of the most Luciferian songs to come out recently… totally agree with you. It's really sad that this is what some people are resorting to for "church" building.

  2. We are having this same type of discussion in the Worship Perspectives class at NOBTS. The Power of salvation belongs to the Lord alone and through the gospel of Christ in the irresistible power of the Holy Spirit. I also have a problem with so many churches folding by becoming appealing to the lustful desires of sinful hearts. It is one thing to welcome all in to hear the gospel and just Come as You Are but another to lure them in with worldly satisfactions and slogans that are contributing to their enslavement to ungodly living and deceit. And its okay (with many of these church-goers) to continue to listen to Lil Wayne or Rhiana and watch all the same teen, sex-driven movies you have always watched because going to church and basically "hanging out at the social club" makes it all holy in the end.

  4. That was disturbing. literally. Its really sad that we have to be things HIP so people will actually go, when they dont even that what they are going to is disturbing and totally against what God had intended church to be

  5. I dunno why my comment came out like that. But I was meaning to say:That was disturbing. literally. Its really sad that we have to do things HIP so people will actually go, that we have to blend in with the world when that is not even supposed to be the purpose. People who go to these churches don't even know what they are going to and it is disturbing and totally against what God had intended church to be

  6. yah, they do a bunch of songs like this. Although the Spirit is free, I really think if the church was separated from the world, and did not use these methods, it would really impact people too. Although I don't think we can alter the number of the elect, I really think it would effect people much more to see something they don't see everyday.

  7. i know this post is old but it caught my eye simply because i was a faithful attendee and servant at this church for many years. I keep this church in my prayers all the time because i see God is using this church to Glorify him and reconcile NorthWest Broward county to himself. God has blessed Church By the Glades and Pastor Davids ministry. Their methods are not to increase the size of their church or be able to record a higher number in attendance or membership but to win souls to Christ. When Christ preached he preached in a way the people understood and made it relevant to that day. Church by the Glades uses the pop culture of today to attract people to a building called the “church” in order to share the gospel of Christ. Remember the “Church” is the body of christ, we are the body of Christ, how one goes about the order of worship is another subject but shouldn’t be attached and then criticized by some to say that God is against it. How can one make that judgement and be blind to see how God has used Church By The Glades to bring ppl to Christ. Whether you like their methods or not God has given the growth and God has harvested for his kingdom at that Church. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 is a verse they take very serious. Paul writes to say he has become all things to all people so he may win some. I beleive thats their intention with the methods the choose to use so one more soul might come to Christ. I will conclude with this thought how does a church that is so-called out of sync with God or Worldly as people have said in this blog and comments,be blessed so much with lives being changed, baptisms taken place in the hundreds and many being challenged to live out a faith so profound. Isn’t that what Chirst came to do, is not Church By The Glades more Christ-Centric then one would think lookin past the skin deep layer. The Holy Spirit doesnt contradict itself soto say a church is out of sync or not blessed yet the Holy Spirit works daily there is a statement of ignorance based on skin deep evaluations.

    1. Adam, the Spirit doesn’t need Rihanna’s help to bring people to Christ. This church seems desperate to be cool and get laughs – even appealing the the sexual sin of man to ‘catch the eye’ (ie “World’s Biggest Stripclub.” Interesting that we are hearing more and more from people (primarily twentysomethings) saying they don’t care about “cool,” they want “real.” From what I have heard from at least one person who regularly attends CBTG is that they don’t go there for solid, deep Bible doctrine or instruction.

It seems like you are judging the work of Christ on what you can see. They bring a lot of people and have a lot of baptisms, so this means they must be faithful. Although we can not discount the importance of what we can see, we shouldn’t judge Christ’s work that way. There are plenty of fellowships who are completely apostate who rake in hundreds of people.

The Spirit will bring people to Christ regardless of how faithful we are. The work is His, not ours. So, yes, He can still save despite how perverse the delivery. It seems that great emphasis is placed on how to be cutting edge, and catch people’s eyes. Unfortunately, many people show up to fellowships like this and get nothing different than what many of them would get at any other social gathering. Certainly, they will get a sermon, but for the most part there is too much of a need for Christians to say, “Hey, we’re just like you…” People should walk in and get something COMPLETELY different.

  8. Matthew 7:21-23
21 Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?”
23 And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”
